UITA Announces Seven New Trustees
SALT LAKE CITY, August 16, 2004 – The Utah Information Technology Association (UITA) announced seven new members to its Board of Trustees at its recent trustee meeting held at the Little America Hotel in Salt Lake City.

New trustee appointments include the following: Ron Beck, Jack Brittain, Jeff Edwards, Scott Hinton, Mike Levinthal, Chris Roybal and Cliff Simpson.

“The additions to UITA’s board will perfectly complement the aggressive new goals and agenda that UITA hopes to accomplish,” said UITA President Richard Nelson. “These seven individuals bring incredible business and community leadership to UITA, which is necessary to advance the growing technology industry that has become so important to Utah.”
Ron Beck
Ron Beck is vice president and general manager for AT&T Business Services. As the lead executive for AT&T in Utah, Beck’s responsibilities include sales, operations, and community relations. Beck is a 20-year veteran in the telecommunications industry, having held key leadership positions for AT&T in Denver, San Francisco and now Salt Lake City. Ron was promoted to vice president in 1998 as a result of his success in helping Silicon Valley’s CIOs develop and implement enterprise network strategies.
Jack Brittain

Jack Brittain is vice president of the University of Utah Technology Venture Department and serves as dean of the David Eccles School of Business. Brittain was a faculty member at University of California, Berkeley for 15 years before coming to the University of Utah as dean in 1999. Under Dean Brittain’s leadership, the David Eccles School restructured and revitalized its graduate programs while maintaining a top 50 undergraduate program ranking. The School’s programs are ranked among the World’s Top 75 by the Financial Times, and as one of the 100 Best Business Schools in the world by the Wall Street Journal.

Jeff Edwards

Jeff Edwards was appointed president and CEO of the Economic Development Corporation of Utah (EDCU) in January 2005. He joined the company as the vice president of client services in June 2001. Edwards has worked in diverse technology marketing and management positions for the last 20 years in the information technology and aerospace industries. Prior to joining EDCU, Edwards was vice president of marketing for Consonus, a web hosting and network engineering firm and a spin-off of Questar Corporation.

Scott Hinton

In 2002 Scott Hinton accepted the position as the Dean of the College of Engineering at Utah State University. Prior to becoming Dean, Hinton joined AT&T Bell Laboratories in Naperville, Illinois as a member of the technical staff in 1981. Hinton headed the Photonic Switching Technologies Group in 1985 and then the Photonic Switching Department in 1989. Hinton has been very active in the scientific and engineering community where he has published over 35 journal articles and 85 conference papers.

Mike Levinthal
Mike Levinthal is a general partner of Thomas Weisel Venture Partners (TWVP). Levinthal joined TWVP in 2004 and focuses on investments in enterprise and application software, Internet services and security. Levinthal brings over 24 years of venture capital investing experience to the firm. Prior to joining TWVP, Levinthal spent 20 years with the Mayfield Fund. Additionally, Levinthal founded Mayfield Software Partners, a side fund consisting of 20 leading software entrepreneurs as investors. He began his career in venture capital at New Enterprise Associates.
Chris Roybal

Chris Roybal is Governor Huntsman’s Senior Advisor for Economic Development. Prior to his appointment, he was president and CEO Economic Development Corporation of Utah (EDCU). During his tenure at the EDCU, Roybal has assisted with many corporate expansions to Utah. Roybal is also the author of the award-winning comparative operating cost model used for corporate site selection. Prior to joining The EDCU, Roybal worked in the management consulting and venture capital sectors. He also held a position with the state of Utah's economic development office.

Cliff Simpson

Cliff Simpson is vice president and treasurer at Novell. Simpson joined Novell in 1987 and is responsible for the company’s treasury activities including investments, risk, shareholder services and tax. His operational responsibilities include worldwide product manufacture/licensing, delivery and order management. Prior to joining Novell, Simpson began his career at KPMG and is a certified public accountant.
