SALT LAKE CITY, September 10, 2004–As a result of Verisoft’s research, computer science can become a clean mathematical theory, allowing companies to create bug-free software, and allow for better, more reliable products, said Dr. Wolfgang Paul to technology business leaders yesterday at Utah Information Technology Association’s (UITA) breakfast meeting at the Hilton Salt Lake City Center.

Former dean of the Technical Faculty at Saarland University in Saarbrücken, Germany, Dr. Paul is the Scientific Manager of Verisoft, a long-term research project dealing with formal verification of computer systems funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research.

“Formal verification of industrial processors is a reality, and people are already doing it,” Paul said. “A vendor can guarantee a system free of faults.”

The Verisoft project is an eight-year plan, focused on:

An increase in industrial productivity and quality.
The creation of methods and tools which would allow the persistent formal verification of the design of integrated computer systems.
The prototypical realization of four concrete application tasks, three of which are from the industrial sector.

“There’s a whole different world out there and we just experienced it,” said Richard Nelson,President & CEO of UITA. “It was a terrific opportunity for IT leaders to hear how Dr. Paul has enriched and cultivated the IT space.”

UITA’s next event is a breakfast meeting with gubernatorial candidates Jon Huntsman, Jr. and Scott Matheson, Jr. on Thursday, September 16, from 7:30 - 9:30 a.m. at the Little America Hotel in Salt Lake City. Each candidate will address issues related to the Utah IT industry followed by a short Q&A session.
