Alan Hall, Founder & Chairman, MarketStar

A native of Ogden, Utah, Mr. Hall is the son of Eugene and Joyce Hall. Alan graduated from Ogden High in 1963 where he served as a student body officer and was captain of the basketball team. He served an LDSChurch mission to Guatemala for two years, where he was an assistant to the mission president.

A 1969 graduate of WeberState’s psychology program, Mr. Hall served as senior class vice president and was a member of the University’s basketball team as a freshman. It was at WSU that he met his wife, the former Jeanne Nowak (who was Miss Weber State at the time), and upon graduation from college, the newly married couple served as Peace Corp volunteers in Bahia, Brazil.

In 1972, Mr. Hall received a master’s degree in business administration from BYU, where he was class president. Following graduation, he began a successful career that reflects his wide variety of interests. He has been the Executive Director of Alumni Relations at his alma mater, an adjunct professor at the University of Utah graduate school, president of Netline In., a computer software company, and president of Ballet West. Today, Mr. Hall is the founder, chairman and CEO of MarketStar Corporation. In December of 1999, Mr. Hall sold the company to the Omnicom Group, the world’s largest marketing communication company.

Seeing a need to help high technology, consumer electronic and telecommunication companies introduce and sell new products in North America; Mr. Hall formed MarketStar in 1988. From a basement office, MarketStar has become a global leader in marketing and sales for companies such as Hewlett Packard, Sony, Intel, Microsoft and Motorola. Last year, MarketStar’s several thousand employees generated over $8 billion in sales for their clients throughout 70 different countries. MarketStar is regarded, as one of America’s most successful and fastest growing companies. Mr. Hall has been recognized for his business successes by several organizations and was honored by Ernest and Young as Utah’s Entrepreneur of the Year.

Mr. Hall has always been an active leader in the community. He is a frequent speaker both locally, nationally and internationally on business and leadership topics. He is the former president of the Weber School District Foundation, past Chairman of the board of the Ogden Weber Chamber of Commerce, chairman of WeberState’s National Advisory Council and a member of the University’s Capital Campaign Executive Committee. He is also member of Wells Fargo Bank’s Northern Utah Advisory Board of Directors and is a member of the Utah Information Technology Association’s board of trustees. He currently serves on the board of directors of the Ogden Symphony Ballet Association and on the marketing committee of the Utah Symphony Opera company. Mr. Hall is currently the co-chairman of the Catholic Community Service’s Ogden area Food Bank capital campaign and chairman of the Mid Town Clinic capital and annual giving campaigns. Mr. Hall is the chairman of the Weber Coalition for a Healthy Community. He presently serves as the bishop of the Roy 11th ward, of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Mr. Hall is the chairman of OgdenCity’s Family First, A Neighborhood Initiative; which is focused on the education, employment, healthcare, housing, and safety of Ogden’s inner-city population. In February of 2003, Mr. Hall spoke to Senator Ted Kennedy’s appropriation committee on behalf of American businesses for the need to continue with the Work Force Investment Act.

Mr. Hall is chairman of the board of the Hall Foundation. Its purpose is to help the poor and needy in WeberCounty and in other areas of the world. The foundation focuses on education, employment, basic necessities, housing, healthcare, social services and the arts. In November of 2004, the Hall Foundation received recognition as one of Utah’s premier foundations during Utah Philanthropy Day ceremonies.

In July of 2004, Mr. Hall founded Grow Utah Ventures and Top of Utah Angels. Their purposes are to stimulate the growth of start up business through private equity investments; increase the number of successful entrepreneurs and employment opportunities; and increase the amount of investment capital for early stage Utah businesses.

In 1998, the Halls received WeberState’s Distinguished Alumni Awards for their contributions to the community and the University. At the WSU commencement in 2000, Mr. Hall received an Honorary Doctorate of Humanities Degree. Mr. Hall is also an honorary base commander at Hill Air Force Base. Catholic Community Services of Utah recently honored the Halls for their contributions to the needy of Northern Utah. They are the 2003 and 2004 recipients of the Ogden Weber Applied Technology College Advisor Council Award for their support of the institution.

The Halls are the parents of six children. Five are married and have wonderful spouses. They are blessed with eight special grandchildren.

Mr. Hall enjoys traveling, golf, reading and foreign languages.
